Events at Matchday 1 of this season’s Champions League group stage focused more on the stunning victory of Real Madrid over a combative Manchester City squad. Glorious finishes from other clubs portray a fitting preview of upcoming events in Europe’s annual top club competition.
Group A: Paris Saint-Germain Hammer down Dynamo Kiev; Porto Triumph over Dinamo Zagreb
Paris Saint-Germain sought to gain fruit from their heavy player investments last summer, paying off with an inspiring 4-1 win over Dynamo Kiev. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 19th-minute goal made him the only player who scored for six various clubs in the Champions League. Thiago Silva, Alex and Javier Pastore scored one goal each following the Swedish striker’s successful effort. Miguel Veloso is the only player in Dynamo Kiev’s score sheet.
Porto breezed through a 2-0 win against hosts Dinamo Zagreb. The Portuguese visitors gained advantage from Lucho Gonzalez’ goal shortly before half-time and widened their margin through Steven Defour’s late-game injury time goal.
Group B: Arsenal Beat Montpellier; Schalke 04 Defeat Olympiakos
Arsenal won its opener 2-1 at Montpellier’s home Stade de la Mosson following goals from Lukas Podolski and Gervinho. The German international opened the scoring in the first half and succeeded by a close-range firing from the Ivorian two minutes later.
Schalke 04’s Benedikt Howedes gave his side the lead over Olympiakos towards the end of the first half. Djamel Abdoun equalized the game but Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fired the winning goal for the Germans less than a minute after.
Group C: Malaga Outdid Zenit St. Petersburg; AC Milan and Anderlecht Stuck In Draw
Malaga secured a 3-0 win at home against Zenit St. Petersburg. Two goals from Isco Alarcon and one from Javier Saviola surpassed the Russians. Hulk, Zenit’s new striker, was not able to make any impact for the Russian squad.
Both AC Milan and Anderlecht ended their opening campaign in a scoreless draw. The Italians’ scoreless stint at their home San Siro pitch now counts to three games in a row.
Group D: Real Madrid Survives Manchester City Thriller; Borussia Dortmund Routs Ajax
Nine-time Champions League winners Real Madrid went through a narrow win in playign against tough oponnent and Premier League champions Manchester City. Goals came late in the second half, with most of the first half spent on possession battles. Ronaldo slotted the winning goal for Madrid minutes before the game concluded – much to the dismay of keeper Joe Hart who was busy warding off opposition goals.
Borussia Dortmund scored the only goal in their match against Eredivisie champions Ajax. Dortmund missed many chances along the way, particularly a penalty from Mats Hummels that shot wide. Robert Lewandowski’s 87th minute thriller routed expectations of a scoreless draw, giving them three points alongside Real Madrid in the “Group of Death”.
