Premier League News Roundup: Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United Updates

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott reflected on his future at the club, saying that he wants to emerge as a legendary figure for The Gunners in the mould of Thierry Henry.

Walcott, who is now spending the final year of his contract with Arsenal, said that the stalling delays do not have anything to do with money. He asserted that his judgments are “based on football and only football” and emphasized his preference of switching to a striker role.

With an agreement still pending on Walcott’s side, the January transfer window could probably be his destination, as remarked by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The winger reportedly declined to sign a recent offer with a weekly sum of £75,000.

Liverpool look headed towards a catastrophic season after five winless league games. Their woes have now worsened as defender Martin Kelly might not play for the rest of this season after sustaining a knee injury during his side’s Anfield match versus Manchester United.

Kelly will undergo knee surgery after findings revealed serious damage to his anterior cruciate ligaments. Fellow defender Daniel Agger is reportedly suffering from a bone bruise after hurting his left knee in a collision with United’s Antonio Valencia, but he did not incur other severe damages.

Newcastle United might have difficulties in playign against tough oponnent Manchester United as striker Wayne Rooney could possibly make his comeback on their Capital One Cup fixture on Tuesday, following a nasty thigh wound that sidelined him in their league match against Fulham.

Rooney has reportedly resumed his training to earn back a starting spot in upcoming matches. He might appear in United’s Saturday league match against Tottenham instead if he does not get to face Newcastle.

Darren Fletcher, who is currently recovering from a chronic bowel condition, will make the starting lineup on Tuesday. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that the game would be a “perfect game” for the midfielder.

Manchester United Shock Host Liverpool in Anfield with 1-2 Win

Liverpool aimed to cause an upset in playign against tough oponnent club Manchester United as they hosted at Anfield on Sunday amidst supporters giving tribute to victims of the Hillsborough disaster. Disappointment soon caught the home crowd as their side failed to convert their possession advantage, succumbing to United 1-2.

Towards the end of the first half, Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey’s serious foul on Jonathan Evans cost him a red card. With only 10 men left, the Reds surged on with Steven Gerrard scoring through an early second-half volley.

Rafael da Silva equalized for United despite their struggles for possession. Antonio Valencia’s takedown from Glen Johnson gave van Persie a penalty spot and successfully converted it to a winning goal.

With the dismaying result for Liverpool, manager Brendan Rodgers has yet to find his first win after five fruitless matches. The side sank once more in the relegation zone of the league table, reflecting lack of progress on their part.

While Liverpool had great command of possession, they were not able to use that advantage well. United took that opportunity to sink their hosts and earn their first Anfield victory since six matches.

The first half appeared to be for Liverpool’s taking, contrasting United’s lack of eloquent play. Gerrard gave a close opportunity for the side, but went wide out of the target. Shelvey’s send-off disturbed the hosts’ momentum.

Rodgers, appearing confident of his side’s prospects, entered Suso in place of Fabio Borini. Gerrard went on to open the scoring in the second half. United’s Shinji Kagawa demonstrated his fine passing form to da Silva, who proceeded to score an equalizer.

United keeper Anders Lindegaard dealt with hectic scoring attempts from Liverpool. The Dane rescued his side from a Luis Suarez attempt and fended off Suso’s high-flier. The Reds faced more of their losing woes when Daniel Agger’s collision with Johnson and a racing Valencia had him ending up on a stretcher.

Van Persie, taking the 81st-minute penalty, flew the ball on the top right beyond Pepe Reina’s reach. Liverpool’s force further declined towards the end of the game after Martin Kelly went out injured.

Europa League Opener Updates: Feisty Liverpool Rout Young Boys, Tottenham Hotspur-Lazio and Maritimo-Newcastle Derbies End In Draws

Three Premier League clubs figured in the opening of the Europa League group stage. None of the English outfits lost, as they performed strongly in playign against tough oponnent sides.

A youthful Liverpool destroyed the winning expectations of Swiss outfit Young Boys in their victorious 3-5 away opener. Substitute Jonjo Shelvey was the Merseyside club’s hero of the night as he made it to the score sheet twice in the second half – first through a forceful 76th-minute right-foot effort following a header from Sebastian Coates and the second one via a left-foot goal on the 88th minute.

An own goal from Young Boys’ Juhani Ojala gave the Swiss opposition a preview of their losing woes.  The Finnish centre-back made up for his mistake through a 52nd-minute goal to equalize debutant Andre Wilson’s score for Liverpool, followed by a scare for the visitors through Gonzalo Zarate’s goal for the Swiss hosts. In the end, the youngster-powered Red prevailed.

Manager Brendan Rodgers’ risky move to leave eight of Liverpool’s regulars in time for their Manchester United league match on Sunday reaped entertaining and impressive results. The outcome refuted Young Boys manager Martin Rueda’s earlier remarks that his side will “embarrass” their English opponents, which they consider a European legend.

Tottenham Hotspur failed in their upset attempt against Lazio, ending the game in a scoreless draw. Due to a foul, the referee called off a header made by Steven Caulker, leaving Andre Villas-Boas’ squad scoreless. Clint Dempsey’s offside effort and Aaron Lennon’s missed close encounter would have given the London club a lead given their strong possession.

Lazio’s stiff defence further added to the Spurs’ difficulties. Miroslav Klose fended off an errant pass from Moussa Dembele, effectively denying an opportunity for the London lads. Alvaro Gonzalez’ 20-yard attempt almost gave a lead for the Romans when it struck on the enemy woodwork’s pole.

A similar fate happened in Newcastle United’s away match against Portuguese hosts Maritimo. Shola Ameobi’s bar strike was a close goal chance for the English visitors. Davide Santon gave Newcastle relief through repelling Valentin Roberge’s mighty corner header, with the game ending 0-0.

Champions League Matchday 1 Roundup: Paris Saint-Germain Gain Impressive Win, Arsenal Trounced Montpellier

Events at Matchday 1 of this season’s Champions League group stage focused more on the stunning victory of Real Madrid over a combative Manchester City squad. Glorious finishes from other clubs portray a fitting preview of upcoming events in Europe’s annual top club competition.

Group A: Paris Saint-Germain Hammer down Dynamo Kiev; Porto Triumph over Dinamo Zagreb

Paris Saint-Germain sought to gain fruit from their heavy player investments last summer, paying off with an inspiring 4-1 win over Dynamo Kiev. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 19th-minute goal made him the only player who scored for six various clubs in the Champions League. Thiago Silva, Alex and Javier Pastore scored one goal each following the Swedish striker’s successful effort. Miguel Veloso is the only player in Dynamo Kiev’s score sheet.

Porto breezed through a 2-0 win against hosts Dinamo Zagreb. The Portuguese visitors gained advantage from Lucho Gonzalez’ goal shortly before half-time and widened their margin through Steven Defour’s late-game injury time goal.

Group B: Arsenal Beat Montpellier; Schalke 04 Defeat Olympiakos

Arsenal won its opener 2-1 at Montpellier’s home Stade de la Mosson following goals from Lukas Podolski and Gervinho. The German international opened the scoring in the first half and succeeded by a close-range firing from the Ivorian two minutes later.

Schalke 04’s Benedikt Howedes gave his side the lead over Olympiakos towards the end of the first half. Djamel Abdoun equalized the game but Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fired the winning goal for the Germans less than a minute after.

Group C: Malaga Outdid Zenit St. Petersburg; AC Milan and Anderlecht Stuck In Draw

Malaga secured a 3-0 win at home against Zenit St. Petersburg. Two goals from Isco Alarcon and one from Javier Saviola surpassed the Russians. Hulk, Zenit’s new striker, was not able to make any impact for the Russian squad.

Both AC Milan and Anderlecht ended their opening campaign in a scoreless draw. The Italians’ scoreless stint at their home San Siro pitch now counts to three games in a row.

Group D: Real Madrid Survives Manchester City Thriller; Borussia Dortmund Routs Ajax

Nine-time Champions League winners Real Madrid went through a narrow win in playign against tough oponnent and Premier League champions Manchester City. Goals came late in the second half, with most of the first half spent on possession battles. Ronaldo slotted the winning goal for Madrid minutes before the game concluded – much to the dismay of keeper Joe Hart who was busy warding off opposition goals.

Borussia Dortmund scored the only goal in their match against Eredivisie champions Ajax. Dortmund missed many chances along the way, particularly a penalty from Mats Hummels that shot wide. Robert Lewandowski’s 87th minute thriller routed expectations of a scoreless draw, giving them three points alongside Real Madrid in the “Group of Death”.

Manchester City Manager Roberto Mancini Needs Sergio Aguero To Be With Them Against Real Madrid As He Ponders On His Side’s Champions League Prospects

To prepare on playign against tough oponnent Real Madrid, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini said that he gave more time for their last season’s top goal scorer Sergio Aguero to rest and stay fit.

Mancini and the rest of City deem their Champions League opening fixture against Real Madrid as their toughest in their second stint at Europe’s most prestigious club competition. To cope up with scoring, they need to pit in Aguero as their strike force. The Argentinian international sustained a knee injury in his side’s Premier League opener against Southampton.

While Aguero has returned to training with City following his international stint with Argentina during the break, Mancini is still uncertain of starting him against Real Madrid. He followed up by assuring that the striker will fly with them to Madrid.

The match between Real Madrid and City will be the first time both teams will face one another. Mancini remarked that they are still trying to build history and that they may not be as competitive against their prestigious Spanish rivals, despite an influx of investment that led to their fresh progress.

The manager believes that while he has good players, he acknowledges their constant need for improvement. Recalling their difficult group stage stint last year, he said that they must be prepared for an even more difficult year at Champions League – this time against their fellow European domestic top-league champions.

Facing Real Madrid will be the greatest trial for Mancini’s managerial career, especially with a recently progressing team in the mould of City. He noted that they have to brace themselves to withstand a team that has a highly successful history, top-class players and a nine-time European club winner, but his side will never settle for a draw or loss.

Calling Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho as a “good manager”, Mancini said that he would be civil with him when they meet at the match, despite their reported rift. Mourinho succeeded the Italian as Internazionale Milan coach in 2008.

Arsenal Bury Southampton through a 6-1 League Thrashing

Arsenal gave a taste of Premier League football to newly promoted Southampton through a 6-1 routing marked by own goals and a string of goal-scoring talent from Gervinho, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott.

In the realm of ball possession, Arsenal proved to be the superior side. Their spectacular first-half showing placed new signing Podolski in the limelight. The German international darted a successful 25-yard shot to claim a second one for the club shortly after Jos Hooiveld’s own goal that spelled disaster for Southampton.

Gervinho followed up four minutes later to penetrate a third for Arsenal. The former Ivory Coast Under-21 captain gave another goal on the 71st minute, which followed another careless own goal from Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne in the first half.

Five goals against Southampton’s one towards the 90th minute, Arsenal’s hunger to play their beautiful game did not stop until the end. An 88th minute thriller from Theo Walcott further widened the club’s lead after rebounding Thomas Vermaelen’s shot saved by Saints keeper Kelvin Davis.

The match brought Arsenal straight to third in the table with just one point under surging rival Manchester United. The club’s series of attacking talent in the match further superseded fears of bleak prospects this season with the exits of prominent players Robin van Persie and Alex Song.

Manager Arsene Wenger remarked that Arsenal has a strong chance to contend for this season’s title, following the overwhelming victory over Southampton. He needs his side to maintain consistency throughout the rest of the season, particularly against the likes of United, Chelsea and titleholders Manchester City.

Crucial to Arsenal’s win is the performance of another new signing, Santi Cazorla. While he may not have scored during the match, he established an outstanding connection with Podolski. Wenger dubbed the Spaniard as having a “first-rate” attitude and technical skills.

In playign against tough oponnent Arsenal, Southampton manager Nigel Adkins said the league has a “ruthless” nature but took the heavy loss as a helpful learning experience for his side. He said that they would further prepare and look forward for their future league fixtures as they pursue for their first points on the table.

Man Utd Routs Wigan 4-0 in Post-International Break League Match

Manchester United continued its fight to regain the Premier League title as it defeated a feeble Wigan side 4-0. Veteran Paul Scholes made his 700th appearance for the club memorable through a stunning goal and his impressive passing stints.

Having risen on the tables to second behind number one Chelsea, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side gained great advantage even in the absence of high-profile new signings Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa. Alex Büttner and Nick Powell further marked the spectacular showing of United as both scored their first goals on their debut for the club.

Kagawa, Rooney and Van Persie’s absences prompted first-team appearances for strikers Danny Welbeck and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. The Mexican international recovered from a penalty save by Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi through his relentless second-half attempts, with the third one becoming successful at the 63rd minute.

While playign against tough oponnent United, Wigan forced pressure in the first half, creating the impression that The Red Devils were struggling from the nonappearance of their lethal strike forces. Scholes broke through the second half with his accurate passes and his eye on the enemy woodwork, making his shot a goal to remember in the match.

The intensity of United’s showing proved that they have recovered from Wigan’s 1-0 home win in their previous league fixture last season. Ferguson describes the upset as the match that cost them the league title.

United could have easily taken over the lead from the first half if not for a failed penalty from Chicharito. Welbeck drew inspiring encounters with the goal as he lacked space due to mounting first-half pressure from Wigan.

While the visitors heavily relied on the likes of Ivan Ramis and Arouna Kone for scoring in the first half, their downhill fall on the second half caused them to lose their seventh straight game at Old Trafford. United’s focus to thwart threats from “little Wigan” – as Ferguson dubs them, highlighted the team’s immense talents.

Sports Tips [SOCCER]: Premier League 2012-13 Manchester United vs. Wigan Athletic

BET FOR WIGAN ATHLETIC @ 1.600 WITH 2.0 HANDICAP!

Manchester United will face Wigan Athletic at home when the Premier League resumes on September 15. This match will be crucial for both sides, as The Red Devils plan to top rivals Chelsea and Manchester City and The Latics are on the move to secure their side away from another relegation threat.

Match Preview

 HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON (Last Five Matches)
2011-12 Premier League (April 12, 2012)
Manchester United    0-1    Wigan Athletic
2011-12 Premier League (December 26, 2011)

2010-11 Premier League (November 20, 2010)
Manchester United    2-0    Wigan Athletic
2009-10 Premier League (December 31, 2009)
Manchester United    5-0    Wigan Athletic

When United play Wigan on Saturday, they might not feature key new signings Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa, as both suffered minor injuries while on their international duties for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Van Persie incurred a thigh injury while playing for the Netherlands in their 4-1 win against Hungary. Kagawa withdrew from Japan’s 1-0 against Iraq due to back pain sustained from training.

While United have played their best in their last two games with the help of van Persie and Kagawa, they face the risk of downgrading when they face Wigan in their absence. Danny Welbeck and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez are suitable replacements, though they have yet to prove their current form as starters for the club this season. Wayne Rooney’s absence is another blow to the club as he is set to spend time on the sidelines for up to two months.

Wigan Athletic will be playign against tough oponnent United, but with a stronger force due to the satisfactory forms of ex-Chelsea striker Franco di Santo, midfielders Shaun Maloney and James McArthur. While they lost to United by 16 goals in four out of their last five matches, they caught the Red Devils by surprise 1-0 in their previous encounter in April last season. A weaker United squad will give ample goal opportunities for Wigan.

A close game is highly possible between the two sides, with Manchester United poised to win at 2-1. Handicap bets would mean a win for Wigan by one goal (see Full Time Handicap below for reference).

Hodgson: England Can Make It To The 2014 World Cup

Roy Hodgson, England national team manager, remarked that he and his side are assured of a World Cup appearance in 2014, despite a display of flaws while playign against tough oponnent Ukraine that led to a 1-1 draw.

Hodgson's side suffered from a lack of key players. The team needed a late-game penalty from Frank Lampard to get past through losing to Ukraine. Disappointing performances from Tom Cleverley aggravated the team's situation at home on Tuesday.

Important players like Andy Carroll, Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott and John Terry were all absent during the Ukraine fixture. Hodgson deemed the call-ups of Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Jake Livermore as necessary, even though none of them played for the seniors before.

Hodgson remained confident that his side will be competing strongly for the World Cup. Saying that many features of the Ukraine game impressed him, he noted the abilities of the youngsters in the game. He added that the team has a strong winning chance especially if all the sidelined players are present.

Expectations were high for England when they thrashed an ailing Moldova side 5-0 prior to last Tuesday's match. Ukraine proved to be a tougher team, given their international potential as seen in EURO 2012.

With the match showing England having a difficult time superseding the Ukrainians, the rescue goal provided by Lampard provided consolation to the team's numerous wasted chances. Cleverley's double wide shots is a far cry from his performance in Moldova that led Hodgson to immediately compare him to Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

A 25-yard goal from Yevgeni Konoplianka, followed by near-goal attempts from Oleg Gusev and Ruslan Rotan, highlighted the strength of Ukraine. Captain Steven Gerrard's send-off and five other bookings, greatly hampered the progress of England. Jermain Defoe's invalidated 20-yard goal due to an illegal hand-off further drew the ire of Hodgson on referee Cuneyt Cakir.

Gerrard joined Hodgson in agreeing that England has a fighting chance for the World Cup. He commended his side's determined attitude and the satisfactory performance of the youngsters, as shown against Ukraine which could have easily earned them a loss.

England will face San Marino and Poland in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers in October.

Del Potro and Roddick first met in the final round of the 2008 ATP LA Tennis Open, which saw the Argentinian win 6-1, 7-6. Their succeeding matches highlighted Del Potro’s rise in tennis and Roddick’s professional struggles. The American won their last fixture in the semi-finals of the 2011 ATP Regions Morgan Keegan Championships – a period of substandard form for Del Potro.

Roddick enjoys great form for the upcoming US Open fourth-round match, having defeated world no. 1 Roger Federer for the third time in his career in an ATP Miami match in March 2012. He recently rose from world no. 31 to 20, following successful title victories at Atlanta and Eastbourne.

Del Potro’s form for this year is impressive, having won the bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics men’s singles event and showed striking performances in the Rotterdam Open and Estoril Open. He lasted until the fourth round of the 2012 Wimbledon and in the 2012 Australian Open quarterfinal.

Both players have great edge to win their upcoming US Open fixture. Del Potro possesses a slim advantage over Roddick following his successful Olympics showing and impressive performances in other Grand Slam events. Roddick’s recent rise in world rankings and his impending retirement from the sport can encourage the American to give a powerful performance towards winning the tournament.
