Barnsley have announced that defender Luke Potter has been forced to retire from football with immediate effect.
The 22-year-old has struggled to return to full fitness following a series of knee operations and arrived at the decision to hang up his boots some time ago.He is understandably disappointed to see a promising career cut short, but bids farewell to the Tykes with fond memories of his time at Oakwell."I'm afraid this is what it's come to," Potter told the club's official website."It's not what I wanted to do. You have to make a decision at some time."I'd like to thank all the physio staff here at Barnsley who have been magnificent. Sedge (Chris Sedgwick), Chris Burton and Kev Hornsby have all been brilliant."
Potter is a graduate of the Barnsley academy system, having been with the club from the age of 12, and the Tykes are saddened to see the career of a home-grown talent brought to shuddering halt after just 21 senior appearances.Director/general manager Dan Rowing said: "The club has lost a good player but one has to feel for Luke whose promising career has been cut short by his injury."Luke signed as a scholar at the same time as I started at the club and I've found him to be very committed and professional in everything he does."
